Quick answer — MRP vs PTR vs PTS: MRP is the maximum price a patient pays (incl. GST). PTR (price to retailer) is usually MRP minus GST minus a ~20% retailer margin: PTR = MRP ÷ 1.05 ÷ 1.20. PTS (price to stockist) is PTR minus a ~10% stockist margin: PTS = PTR ÷ 1.10. For a ₹120 MRP pack: PTR ≈ ₹95.24 and PTS ≈ ₹86.58 (excl. GST).
The first question almost every new distributor asks before taking a PCD pharma franchise is simple: how much will I actually earn on each strip, vial or bottle? The answer sits in three numbers printed on every rate list — MRP, PTR and PTS — and in the rate your manufacturer bills you. This guide explains how those numbers are calculated in India, walks through a complete worked example, and shows which factors really decide your margin.
MRP, PTR and PTS — what each term means
- MRP (Maximum Retail Price): the highest price a patient can be charged, inclusive of GST. It is printed on the pack.
- PTR (Price to Retailer): the price at which a chemist or hospital pharmacy buys the product. The gap between PTR and MRP is the retailer’s margin.
- PTS (Price to Stockist): the price at which a stockist or wholesaler buys. The gap between PTS and PTR is the stockist’s margin.
- Company rate / franchise rate: the price at which the PCD company bills you, the franchise partner. Your margin is the difference between this rate and the price you sell at (PTS or PTR).
Standard trade margins used to calculate PTR and PTS
In most of the Indian pharma trade, prices are worked backwards from MRP using customary margins: roughly 20% for the retailer (as a markup on PTR) and 10% for the stockist (as a markup on PTS). GST is removed from MRP first, because margins are calculated on the pre-tax price. Since 22 September 2025 most drugs and medicines attract 5% GST (reduced from 12%), which changes the arithmetic slightly compared with older rate lists.
- MRP excluding GST = MRP ÷ 1.05
- PTR (excluding GST) = MRP excluding GST ÷ 1.20
- PTS (excluding GST) = PTR ÷ 1.10
Some companies quote margins as a discount on MRP rather than a markup on cost, so always check which method a rate list uses — a 20% markup and a 20% discount give different numbers.
Worked example: one product from MRP to your margin
Take a product with an MRP of ₹120 (inclusive of 5% GST). The figures below are illustrative — your actual franchise rate comes from your manufacturer’s rate list.
| Step | Calculation | Amount (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| MRP (incl. GST) | Printed on pack | 120.00 |
| MRP excluding GST | 120 ÷ 1.05 | 114.29 |
| PTR excluding GST | 114.29 ÷ 1.20 | 95.24 |
| PTR including GST | 95.24 × 1.05 | 100.00 |
| PTS excluding GST | 95.24 ÷ 1.10 | 86.58 |
| PTS including GST | 86.58 × 1.05 | 90.91 |
Now suppose the PCD company bills you at ₹60 (plus GST). Your gross margin depends on who you sell to:
| You sell to | Your selling price (excl. GST) | Gross margin per unit | Margin on your cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stockist / wholesaler (at PTS) | ₹86.58 | ₹26.58 | 44.3% |
| Retailer / hospital pharmacy (at PTR) | ₹95.24 | ₹35.24 | 58.7% |
The same product billed at ₹55 would give ₹31.58 at PTS, while a ₹70 rate would leave only ₹16.58. A ₹10 difference in the franchise rate moves your margin far more than any change in volume, which is why comparing rate lists line by line matters more than comparing brochures.
What gross margin does not include
Gross margin is not profit. Before you calculate your real return, deduct:
- Medical representative salaries, incentives and travel
- Freight from the plant to your godown
- Scheme discounts or free quantities offered to chemists
- Near-expiry and breakage losses (ask your manufacturer about their expiry replacement policy)
- Promotional inputs beyond what the company supplies, and working-capital interest on credit given to the trade
Our PCD franchise investment and cost calculator walks through these costs for lean, standard and aggressive entry scenarios.
Price rules every PCD partner should know
- Scheduled formulations (NLEM molecules) are covered by ceiling prices fixed by the NPPA under the Drug (Prices Control) Order, 2013. The ceiling price already builds in a 16% retailer margin, so MRP cannot be set above it regardless of the brand.
- Non-scheduled formulations are not capped in the same way, but a manufacturer cannot raise the MRP by more than 10% in a 12-month period.
- Never sell above MRP, and make sure the MRP, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates and GST details on every invoice match the pack.
Five factors that decide your real margin
- Franchise rate vs MRP spread — compare the company rate against PTS/PTR for your top 20 products, not just the headline range.
- Product mix — hospital injectables and speciality products usually carry wider spreads than crowded tablet molecules sold by hundreds of brands.
- Monopoly rights — a written monopoly for your district protects your pricing from a second distributor of the same brand. See our guide to monopoly contract clauses.
- Hospital and institutional supply — tender and hospital business brings volume at predictable prices; read how to qualify as a hospital tender supplier.
- Collection discipline — margin on paper is only real once the trade pays; keep credit periods tight.

Frequently asked questions
What is the profit margin in a PCD pharma franchise?
It is the difference between the manufacturer’s franchise rate and the price you sell at (PTS to stockists or PTR to retailers). It varies by product and company, so calculate it product by product from the rate list rather than relying on a single headline percentage.
How is PTR calculated from MRP?
Remove GST from MRP first, then divide by 1 + the retailer margin. With 5% GST and a 20% retailer markup, PTR (excl. GST) = MRP ÷ 1.05 ÷ 1.20.
What GST applies to medicines in 2026?
Most drugs and medicines are taxed at 5% since 22 September 2025, and a set of life-saving medicines is exempt. Check the HSN code and rate on each invoice — see our GST guide for PCD pharma wholesalers.
Can a PCD partner sell above MRP?
No. MRP is the legal maximum for any sale to a patient, and every level of the trade prices below it.
